Image: Final Fantasy VI Statue of the Gods and Kefka

The final boss(es) from my favorite game. I had trouble finding a decent-sized version of both the three-tier statue and Kefka, so I cobbled this together from three different images: the statues, the sun and sky background, and the crazed Kefka himself. The images are from the iOS version of the game, so the pixels are a bit smoother while still retaining the 16-bit look from the original SNES version. The image of Kefka was added, enlarged (since it’s a raster image, the quality was reduced but it’s not too noticeable), and brightened it a little to match everything else.

I am old enough to have the privilege of playing the original game when it came out, and I remember the “feel” of the statues being very different than most of the enemies you had faced up until that point.

The Final Fantasy wiki page on the statue doesn’t disclose their official nature, but one theory that seems plausible is that it, plus Kefka, they represent the 3+1 parts of Dante’s Divine Comedy (Hell, Purgatory, Heaven, God). Or they could be manifestations of the Warring Triad statues seen earlier in the game. Aside from their Renaissance aesthetic, I don’t think a “deeper nature” of the statues is necessary, given Kefka’s nutty nihilism. They are simply creatures he formed for battle, ad hoc, with his acquired esper abilities.
